CEN TC 389 - Innovation Management

The EU considers innovation as a key issue, in order to maintain the European competitiveness inthe global market and to create value for the relevant stakeholders. This interest is evidenced bypolitical statements and the creation of several instruments and programmes. Furthermore, the ECCommunication 133-08 “Towards an increased contribution from standardization to innovation inEurope”, explicitly highlights that standardization must strengthen its role in support of innovationand competitiveness.CEN considers innovation as a key objective as well, promoting standardization as a mean tosupport a culture of innovation in Europe. In parallel, 15 national standards related with innovationmanagement are published in Europe. CEN had created a series of technical bodies, including thecreation of a new specific TC on “Innovation Management”.Due to the wide consideration of all kinds of innovation (including technology and non technologyinnovation), the range of interested stakeholders includes almost all the sectors of economic andpublic activities.

TC 389 is dealing with standardisation on Innovation Management. The aim is to optimise the planning of innovation processes and resources.

The overall objective of TC 389 is to provide organisations with tools, methods, approaches, processes in order to facilitate the realisation of innovation management, improve the competitiveness of European enterprises and organisations, and optimise the results of their innovation activities.

TC 389 is currently working on the following topics:
- Guidelines for an Innovation management system;
- Collaboration and creativity management;
- Innovation self-assessment tools;
- Intellectual property management.
